CITB Site Managers Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)

Duration of course: Five Days (1 day per week for five weeks)

Course Aims/Objectives: The CITB Site Safety Plus Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) health and safety course is one of the most highly regarded training courses within the construction industry. The SMSTS training course helps site managers (and anyone wanting to become a site manager) to develop a better understanding of the legal, moral and social responsibilities of their role, and to manage health and safety on site in accordance with current legal provisions.

The industry recognised SMSTS training course is ideal for companies that need to meet the ever increasing demand for evidence of health and safety compliance.

The training course is intended for project managers, site managers and site supervisors as well as proprietors of small to medium sized companies. Client-based personnel would also benefit from attending the SMSTS training course. Possession of the CITB SMSTS qualification is listed in the Approved Code of Practice for the construction (Design and Management) (CDM) Regulations as a demonstration of competence in the role of site manager.

Course Content: The SMSTS Training course covers the Health and Safety at Work Act and the regulations relevant to the construction industry (and other workplaces), including:

  • Site Set Up
  • CDM
  • Risk Assessment
  • Method Statements
  • Scaffolding
  • Electricity
  • Excavations
  • Demolition
  • Confined Space

During the SMSTS training course, candidates must pass core exercises. The SMSTS training course can be delivered either on or off site, working around the individual needs of the client. At the end of the training course, candidates sit an examination in order to qualify for the CITB certificate.

Qualification: Successful candidates are awarded an SMSTS certificate which lasts for five years, after which candidates must sit the two day SMSTS Refresher course to renew the certificate and keep their qualification up to date. The two-day Refresher training course is only available for candidates who have attended the full five-day training course and can provide evidence of attending the original course.

N.B. It must be stressed to all course attendees the need to attend ALL sessions, since without full attendance the examining body will not award the CITB SMSTS Construction Site Managers Safety Certificate


CITB Site Managers Safety Training Scheme Refresher (SMSTSR)

Duration of Course: 2 Consecutive days

Course Aims/Objectives: The CITB SMSTS Refresher training course is designed to ensure that personnel maintain up-to-date health and safety knowledge. The course covers changes to legislation, approved codes of practice and best working practice within the industry.

Only those individuals who have passed the five day course and provided evidence of this will be eligible to take the two day refresher course. Individuals wishing to renew their SMSTS certificate must provide a copy of the original five-day course certificate.

Course Content:

  • Appreciate recent developments in construction legislation accident causes, reasons for prevention.
  • Understand the legal system relevant legislation, Approved codes of Practice, Guidance Notes code of Practice and Case Law.
  • Conduct risk assessments.
  • Monitor heal and safety performance.
  • Understand best practice in the management of sub-contractors.
  • Disseminate information to operatives and sub-contractors.
  • Introduction to Health and Safety Management.
  • Managing Health and Safety
  • Responsibilities of Supervisors and Managers.
  • Measuring and Auditing health and safety performance.
  • Control of hazards and risks.

All candidates must the two full day sessions and pass each of the core exercises. At the end of the two day course there will be an examination.

Qualification: Successful candidates will be awarded the SMSTS Renewal Certificate. This certificate will remain valid for five years.
